Following Apple’s successful release of the iPhone 14 series in September, rumours have been continually circulating as to what may come with the iPhone 15 series. Apple will host their annual event on September 12th but what are we likely to see from the new handsets later this year?

Design

Once again, this year Apple are expected to unveil 4 models of iPhone 15. This is expected to follow the same format of the iPhone 14, with an iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Rumours suggest that the ‘Dynamic Island’ that was first introduced for iPhone 14 Pro models, will now also be extended to the full iPhone 15 range.

The 15 Pro models may feature thinner and more curved bezels than their 14 Pro counterparts, while the iPhone 15 models are expected to take on the flatter edge design of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. The iPhone 15 Pro line-up is also likely to feature a titanium body, rather than stainless steel to offer a more reinforced chassis.

Cameras

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus may adopt the 48MP camera that was introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro models. This would offer significantly better image quality than the main cameras on the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.

Perhaps the most radical change to the iPhone 15 camera setup is that the Pro Max will possibly feature a periscope zoom lens. This offers optical zoom capabilities beyond that of the iPhone 14 range and would allow for 5x, or possibly even 10x, optical zoom. A significant enhancement over the 14 Pro range cameras which are limited to 3x zoom. This is something that the Android handsets have now incorporated for quite some time, and therefore would be a welcome addition to the iPhone.

There have also been reports that Apple will collaborate with Sony for the main camera of the iPhone 15 range, by using Sony’s state of the art sensor, which should make for brighter and more colourful photos, while also offering better exposure controls as this sensor can reportedly double the pixel saturation.

Wi-Fi 6E

Apple are also expected to upgrade to Wi-Fi 6E, which will offer increased bandwidth, faster connectivity speeds and lower latency when compared to Wi-Fi 6 on the iPhone 14 range. It has been suggested however that the upgrade to Wi-FI 6E may be limited to the iPhone 15 Pro Models.

USB-C

As per new EU regulations, new handsets are required to support USB-C charging. As such, 2023 we will see the iPhone 15 series leave the lightning port behind in favour of USB-C.

No Touch ID

Prior to even the iPhone 14 releasing, there have been ongoing rumours that Apple are considering the return of Touch ID to the iPhone. This will not happen with the iPhone 15, which will continue to use Face ID.

Action Button

The 15 Pro models are expected to replace the mute button with an action button, this rumoured to add additional functionality and will likely emulate the action button found on the Apple Watch Ultra. Meanwhile the 15 and 15 Plus are likely to feature the traditional mute switch.

A-Series Chip Upgrades

The iPhone 15 and 15 are likely to feature the A16 chip currently used by the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, which would still see an upgrade in processing performance when compared to their iPhone 14 counterparts.

The iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to be first devices to feature an A-series chip made with the 3-nanometer node from chip supplier TSMC, the A17 chipset. This is anticipated to increase processing performance anywhere between 10 and 15 percent, while a 35 percent improvement in power efficiency has been estimated, which would bode well for the battery life of the 15 Pro models.

iPhone 15 Range Leather Cases

As ever, the TORRO team are working hard to ensure that you can add style and function to your iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max with a premium leather case from the moment you receive your new device.

iPhone Rumours Beyond 2023

One early rumour for the iPhone 15 range was that Apple were considering leaving behind the Plus model, in favour of a new ‘Ultra’ model, alongside the Pro Max. This has now become a possibility for the 2024 iPhone.

There have also been reports on the future of the Face ID technology used in Apple’s flagship devices. Prior to the unveiling of the last couple of iterations of iPhone, there have been suggestions that Apple are planning to implement under-display Face ID technology. While this was again an early rumour about the iPhone 15, there have been conflicting reports, stating that this is something that may now be seen on the 2024 or 2025 iPhone models.
